Pardo peeps conquer the city of lights, Hong Kong

Updated: Oct 17, 2023

Hong Kong holds a special place in my heart - it was my first international adventure, and I keep coming back for more. Even though I can't speak Cantonese, every visit feels like coming home. Let me take you on a journey through my trip with my Ohana (that's family in Hawaiian) and best friends. This blog has everything you need to know about traveling to Hong Kong and how our group of twelve, spanning all ages, survived the bustling city together.

FOOD:  Let's start with the most important aspect - food! Hong Kong is known as the "World's Food Fair," and trust me, it lives up to the title. Dimsum is a must-eat, with delicacies like chicken feet, sweet and sour pork, wontons, Peking duck, dumplings, and more. Don't forget to try the famous milk tea and egg tarts. And let me tell you, the Mixian rice noodles in Kowloon are worth the trip alone. Buffets and street food are also abundant, so prepare your taste buds for a feast.

TRANSPORTATION: Getting around Hong Kong is a breeze, thanks to its efficient transportation system. The city is made up of three main islands. Central is the bustling business and retail hub, with towering skyscrapers, luxury hotels, and swanky malls. Take in the panoramic view of Victoria Harbor and its iconic star ferry.

TO DO's: For a more tranquil experience, trek to Lions Head or visit Big Waves Bay or Standley Beach. Kowloon, the heart of Hong Kong, is a food lover's paradise. It's where you'll find my true love - Mixian rice noodles - along with countless other food hubs. It's also a great place for budget travelers, with affordable hotels like Chung King Mansion. Get ready for the chaos and crowds in the shopping district of Mong Kok, where haggling is a must. Lantau Island is where we landed, and it's home to Hong Kong Disneyland and the famous Big Buddha (Ngong Ping). Spend a day exploring the magical world of Disney and then head to Ngong Ping to marvel at the stunning statue and enjoy the breathtaking views.

3 DAY ITINERARY: Now, let's dive into our sample three-day itinerary. We arrived at our hotel, The Bay Bridge, and then explored the streets of Kowloon in search of delicious food. Day two was all about the magic of Disneyland, followed by a visit to Ngong Ping and a shopping spree in Mong Kok. On our final day, we wandered around Kowloon, also made sure to visit the famous Ladies Market in Mong Kok, where we indulged in some shopping and tried our hand at bargaining for souvenirs and clothing. One of the highlights of our trip was taking a ride on the iconic Star Ferry, which crosses Victoria Harbor between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. The ferry ride offered stunning views of the city skyline and was a great way to experience the vibrant energy of Hong Kong. We also made sure to visit the Peak Tram, a historic funicular railway that takes you to the top of Victoria Peak. The view from the Peak was absolutely breathtaking, with panoramic vistas of the cityscape and the harbor below. It was the perfect spot to take some memorable photos. To escape the hustle and bustle of the city, we ventured to the beautiful Lamma Island. We took a leisurely hike along the scenic trails, enjoyed seafood at the local restaurants, and soaked up the laid-back vibe of the island. It was a refreshing change of pace from the fast-paced city life.

TIPS: Throughout our trip, we were amazed by the efficiency and convenience of Hong Kong's public transportation system. The MTR (Mass Transit Railway) made it easy to navigate the city, and the Octopus Card, a prepaid smart card, made paying for transportation and purchases a breeze. Of course, no trip to Hong Kong would be complete without indulging in some shopping. We explored the bustling shopping districts of Causeway Bay and Central, where we found everything from luxury brands to trendy boutiques. The street markets, such as Temple Street Night Market and Stanley Market, were also must-visit destinations for unique souvenirs and local goods. In the evenings, we enjoyed the vibrant nightlife of Hong Kong. From rooftop bars with stunning views to lively night markets and street food stalls, there was never a dull moment. We even had the opportunity to catch a traditional Cantonese opera performance, immersing ourselves in the rich cultural heritage of the city. Hong Kong truly offers something for everyone, from food lovers and shopaholics to nature enthusiasts and culture seekers. It's a city that never fails to captivate and leave a lasting impression. Our trip with family and friends was filled with unforgettable memories, and we can't wait to return to this dynamic and captivating city
